New 2015 UFO Sighting

UFO Sighting in Astoria, Massachusetts on 1962-07-08 00:00:00 - Red glowing 1/3 angular size of moon appearing very hot (shimmering) appeared very large as it was same size as went over horizon as overhead

This sighting occurred many years ago when i was 15 years old. i had been an amateur astronomer since age 7. the only reason i am submitting it now is that i have recently joing mufon and that i had received a response from dr. menzel (mj-12 fame) after i sending in the sighting to him. at the time i was a member of the bond club which was a group of amateur (and professional) astronomer who met monthly at the harvard college observatory in cambridge massachusetts. the sighting itself occurred as i was going to bed. my bed was next to a window as i liked to look at the stars. i noticed a fairly bright red object nearly overhead and thought it interesting enough to put on my glasses (as i was nearsighted). i could resolve it as a disk about 1/2 the angular size of the moon. i shouted out excitedly to my family: "flying saucer". i jumped up and grabbed a pair of 7x50 binoculars and thought briefly about grabbing my 35mm camera but realized that i would get nothing useful with it (hurray for digital cameras). through the binoculars i could resolve that it appeared "hot" as it was shimmering and it looked much as a planet through my telescope at high magnification under a night of terrible "seeing" like would happen in our new england winter after a vigorous cold front passage. this particular summer night was warm and humid with good "seeing" (but terrible transparency). i made note that it appeared the same angular size when it left over the western horizon as it was when overhead which led me to think that it was very large and very far away. while i have observed other odd lights during countless nights as an amateur and professional observer, i have not seen anything else as "good" as this event.
